Sometimes the thing that holds you together
ends up causing the most damage . . .
A gasp of air seemed to slice through Anika on its way in, and she quickly backtracked so that the emission wouldn’t give her away. Desperately casting her eyes about for something else to focus on—anything else—Anika took in the scene around her. Atop the hay-strewn ground the summer grass was a tender green, naïve blossoms just poking their heads out to see if winter had finally passed. If it was safe to come out. Those innocent blooms didn’t know how cruel life could be. They didn’t know that life sometimes lurked in the shadows, waiting for you to decide the coast was clear before pouncing.
Anika leaned back against the barn, flattening her hands against its splintered solidity. She’d always loved old barns their reliability, their timelessness, their constancy. No matter what they looked like on the outside, peeling or freshly painted, crumbling or just constructed, you always knew what you were getting; a barn was still a barn.
If only people were the same.

This is the third book I've read by this author, and it's definitely my favorite. Being a Jane Austen fan, I've read Mansfield Park several times, and enjoyed the movie and tv specials. However, the story itself always paled in comparison to P&P--until today. This version not only gives us a "modern" take on the basic plot, but infuses each character with new life. "Fanny Price" as "Ani Price" is a complex and relatable character, and my heart ached for her as she watched the love of her life drift away from her. Edmund is half oblivious and half in denial, and even though there were moments I wanted to hate him, much like Ani I just couldn't do it. I wanted this couple to find their "happily ever after"--not because Jane Austen said so, but because they belong together.I hope it doesn't take two years for this author to produce another piece--each book gets better and better!

Nice beach read!👍🏾
A good, clean emotional read!
I love all of Misty's books! She is a fantastic writer and she is CLEAN! I know I will be entertained but not get embarrassed if my daughters read them.
Love a good modern retelling of an Austen classic. Love the characters and the way the story flowed. Enjoy!!
Loved this novel and all of her others! Worth the read!!
I cannot tell you enough how this writer is plain amazing! She keeps a fast pace book with all of the important things in it. She makes me cry, she makes me laugh, she makes me fall in love all over with my husband. Love you books, keep them coming please!
Misty Dawn has done it again. I love how she takes Austen's classics and spins them into contemporary stories that breathe a life of their own. Not only are they well-written, with realistic characters, and well-thought-out plot, but they are thoroughly enjoyable & addictive read, too! This is a new favorite, That I'm sure I'll read over and over again as I have her other two. I'll happily read anything from Misty, no matter how long out takes to come out!
