I seldom read poetry, but this was recommended by a friend and I've really enjoyed it. These poems are vivid in a way I don't generally think of poetry as being - I agree with the above about the strength of the sense of place. You can tell she smiled as she wrote these; her love of language is loud and clear.
After receiving my copy in the mail, I read the whole thing in one sitting, and my only complaint was that it ended. Ms. Penner's poems span a lifetime of experiences, detailing impressions made both by places and people in stark and sometimes startling detail. A very enjoyable read. Highly recommended, even for those who don't normally call themselves poetry fans.
It was such a pleasure to read this volume. After receiving the book,I chose to read only 4 poems each evening in order to savor a few at a time.In the morning,I often would reread the poems from the previous evening. Due to the depth of the work, each poem in the collection deserves to be read at least twice. I was fortunate to attend a book signing where the author read from When East Was North, as well as several of her new poem that aren't included in the book. If you ever have an opportunity to catch Ms. Penner doing a reading on her book tour, ATTEND ! I can heartily recommend this thoughtful poetry book!
This book is a wonderful read. I admit to not having a strong appreciation for poetry, so I was surprised how readily I was hooked into this collection. I found myself immersed in reading that carried me away much like listening to tales of Lake Wobegon. The poems, in themselves, are wonderful and well penned with wonderful twists of humor. This collection takes them to a level beyond mere poetry with a flow and sequence that is masterful and brilliant. It is a canon that tells a tale. I hope there is a sequel in the offing someday.....
Andrea Millenson Penner's verse avoids falling into the semi-indulgent confessionary on which it occasionally verges by specifying time, place, and feeling in a way that allows the mundane to transcend itself and reach the level of the ethereal.
Lists of heady fragrances, flora and fauna, collages of scattered ephemera, tap into the literary concept of situatedness. As, for example, Penner provides a manifest of her mother's household items which she discarded or sold before putting her mother into an assisted living facility, we not only see glimpses into her own individual perspective and place in the world, but we also are asked to consider our own "stuff" - what we need, what are luxuries. . .
We are clear that place is important to Penner - maybe more so than anything else. And we are therefore willing to make her personal maps ours for a time.
What Penner excels at is moving from the specific to the universal while also delighting readers with a cornucopia of sensory details.
By turns moody, wistful, funny, plaintive, Andrea Penner's poems give fleeting, eminently personal images and impressions of life in all its poetic and sometimes sordid aspects, starting ca. 1968 and progressing more or less chronologically to the present day. Her poems tell of, among other things, relationships in their often dismayingly transitory and nebulous natures; quirky characters; problematic events and life passages. Also of trysts in the library (PR's, PN's and PS's, please). Her writings have a wafty, sketchy quality, but a deceptive depth upon re-reads.
Penner has a special fondness for places - the northern Territory, South Africa, San Quentin, among others - and of the colorful characters one encounters in said places. But mostly she writes of the desert Southwest and especially the high desert of New Mexico.
Some of the poems venture perilously close to the excessive and the precious, in an understated sort of way, but happily Penner never lapses into the maudlin or facilely sentimental. Rather, her impressions span a lifetime of experiences and explore people in often surprising ways, most of all appreciating their humanity in her poems. Wispy, heavy, enlightening and illuminating, they challenge us to transcend the familiar and the normal.
There's at once a wonderful lightness and seriousness to the works here, and they will reward repeated readings. Highly recommended. Big kudos to Meg Leonard's cover art; it's the most striking cover I've seen in a long time, but more to the point perfectly complements the mood and tone of Penner's writings.
